We are thrilled to announce the 2016 True Blue honorees! This year the New Kings Democrats will be celebrating two groups that have displayed a dedication to elevating the standards of political and social life, as well as exceptional leadership in bettering Brooklyn and New York City. Both groups, and the individuals who are a part of them, empower people traditionally marginalized in the political process -- particularly women and immigrants.
Worker’s Justice Project has worked to help Brooklyn’s low-wage immigrant workers, including day laborers and domestic workers, gain a voice in the workplace and build strong, economically sustainable, participatory communities through organizing, education, and leadership development. From helping day laborers organize for better wages to building democratically governed worker-owned businesses, Worker’s Justice Project has been a proven leader in expanding access to decision-making process and economic justice for immigrants. NKD is honoring the organization staff and member-leaders of Worker’s Justice Project.
The Young Women's Advisory Council is a group of young women between 14 and 25 years old who have played an integral role in the shaping and success of the Young Women's Initiative: a multi-sector coalition focused improving the lives of young women in New York City by addressing racial, gender-based, and other social disparities. By centering City efforts around the voices of young cis and trans women of color, the Young Women's Advisory Council is actively creating a more inclusive and accountable public politic. They have nurtured spaces within local government in which traditionally marginalized experiences and expertise are amplified and leveraged for social change.
