A Win for the Democratic Coalition of the Future

It's a wrap! Andrew Cuomo conceded the mayoral primary and Zohran Mamdani will be the Democratic nominee for NYC mayor in November! Beyond that, NKD's endorsed candidates for City Council (Shahana Hanif, Alexa Avilés, Crystal Hudson, and Lincoln Restler), Brooklyn Borough President (Antonio Reynoso), and Public Advocate (Jumaane Williams) all won decisive victories.

Back in January, NKD landed on a coalition strategy as the best chance to win this mayoral race. Inspired by a proposal from the Working Families Party, we came up with a plan for our first multi-candidate endorsement. In February we endorsed four candidates for mayor, and we urged our allies to do the same.

Our friends at Brooklyn Young Dems and Lambda Independent Democrats endorsed slates as well (not identical slates, but close enough for coalition work). So did Seaside Dems, Make the Road, and many others. The WFP took the lead in keeping the coalition together, and we made their Rank the Slate canvasses our top organizing priority. NKD members had hundreds of conversations with voters about how they could use all of their rankings for good candidates.

The candidates (with one exception) understood the assignment — Zohran ran a perfect campaign, and Brad Lander, Zellnor Myrie, and Adrienne Adams did heroic work for the coalition even after it became clear they didn’t have the numbers to win it for themselves. DSA, JFREJ and other organizations, unions, Democratic clubs, and campaigns all worked together in what must be the biggest volunteer operation NYC has seen in decades.

Cuomo’s haters played a crucial role too, including many of us who spent hours digging through his record and finding new ways to remind voters what a monster he is. Lindsey Boylan, Charlotte Bennett, and many others that Cuomo harmed stepped up to lead the fight — this victory belongs to them.

We are full of awe and gratitude for all of the coalition partners, candidates, and supporters who made this victory possible—those who did the work without worrying about who gets the credit, those who care more about values than whose name is on the top of the ticket.

Now we know that this approach, adopted by a broad coalition, can win a citywide race. This coalition can become the new Democratic Party that Brooklyn has needed for so long — one that builds grassroots support, one that wins elections, and one that delivers for every community. We're so excited to continue building that future—and we hope you'll join us!
